What Is the Canine Care Certified Program?
Canine Care Certified (CCC) is a nationwide program established by animal welfare experts at Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Its goal is to ensure that breeders adhere to rigorous, science-based standards for the health and well-being of dogs. Powerful, intelligent, and deeply loyal, the Cane Corso is a large Italian mastiff-type breed originally bred for guarding property and working alongside farmers. Adults typically weigh 90–120 pounds and stand 23.5–27.5 inches tall at the shoulder. Known for their muscular build and confident presence, Cane Corsos are protective yet affectionate with their families, making them an excellent choice for experienced dog owners.
The Cane Corso’s roots trace back to ancient Roman war dogs used in battle and for guarding property. Over time, they transitioned into versatile farm dogs in southern Italy, protecting livestock and working alongside their owners. The breed nearly disappeared after World War II but was revived in the 1970s by dedicated Italian breeders. Recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 2010, the Cane Corso is now admired worldwide as a loyal guardian and companion.
Developed for strength, endurance, and a natural guarding instinct, the Cane Corso was selectively bred for its ability to perform multiple tasks. Its short, dense coat and strong, athletic frame made it highly adaptable to different working conditions. Modern breeders have maintained these traits while emphasizing a stable temperament, producing dogs that are both reliable protectors and devoted family companions.
Cane Corsos are confident, protective, and highly intelligent. They bond strongly with their families and are naturally wary of strangers, making early and ongoing socialization essential. While affectionate with those they know, they thrive under firm, consistent leadership. Cane Corsos enjoy having a purpose and do best in homes where they receive structured training and activities.
This breed needs plenty of space and daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Long walks, play sessions, and obedience work help satisfy their physical and mental needs. Cane Corsos thrive in homes with secure yards and owners who are present and engaged with them, as they do not do well if left alone for extended periods. Regular grooming is simple thanks to their short coat, but they do shed moderately year-round.
Yes, in the right home. Cane Corsos can be wonderful family companions when properly socialized and trained, but they require experienced owners who understand how to manage a strong, protective breed.
They can, but they may be territorial and dominant, particularly with dogs of the same sex. Early introductions and socialization are key to helping them coexist peacefully with other pets.
Cane Corsos require at least 60–90 minutes of daily exercise. Activities like walking, running, or advanced training help channel their energy and keep them well-balanced.
